Versailles

5.5/8.0 Versailles is located south and west of Paris, about 45 minutes away by car (and French driving) from the center of the city. It is famous for Louis XIV (the “Sun King”) and Louis the XVI, who ran away there during the French Revolution (or I could be making this up).

There are many tours available, and some of them are in English. The tours are for different sections. Go early, as the tours tend to get filled up. You have to sign up for these tours.

Another possibility is to take a self-tour. You get a CD player that describes the various rooms. I found this to be a good way to view the palace, because you can go at your own pace, and you get a few audio treats that a tour guide can’t give. You just can’t ask a CD any questions.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take many good pictures. You can take pictures inside of the castle, but they ask that you don’t use your flash.

What I’d really like to do one day is a photo exposition called the, “The Scaffoldings of Europe.” It would be pictures of famous sites being worked on, like this one. This is the real reason I didn’t have a picture of the front of Notre Dame.

This is Versailles from the “rear” view. Contrast this with my picture of Herrenchiemsee, King Ludwig’s replica of Versailles. It’s hard to see in this picture, but there are wings on the left and right of the building which are not present in Ludwig’s version.

If you were to turn around from the view shown in the previous picture, this is what you would see. King Ludwig’s Herrenchiemsee also has a similar view, although unfinished.

There are additional gardens to the left and right of this. The grounds are quite extensive.
