Neuschwanstein Castle

On a clear day, you can see forever.

You’re probably saying to yourself that you’ve seen this picture before. Well, you have. The only difference is that the first one was taken in April, and this was taken in June, when the trees were greener, the sky bluer, and the clouds whiter, the weather warmer, the waiting lines longer, the climb sweatier, ... well, you get the picture.

So, the old one had to go. (Both pictures were taken from Marie’s Bridge.)

Neuschwanstein Castle II

Teeny, tiny bridge in the distance

This is a view of Marie’s Bridge from the palace. According to local lore, the bridge was named after Ludwig’s mother, who was the first woman to cross the bridge (without the guard rails).

I didn’t ask anyone, but I don’t think bungie-jumping off the bridge is allowed. Besides, those rocks are probably harder than most people’s heads.

Ignore the tourists

All right -- one more bridge picture. This is actually on the bridge. Now your life is complete. (Just ignore the three American tourists looking at the camera.)

This Land Is My Land,...

Another view outside of the castle, this time overlooking the fields and lake -- where your serfs would be living if you were Lord of Neuschwanstein. It’s good to be the king.

Vroom...

A view of the palace from the road. The palace is the white speck between the mountains, over the windshield of the car. (Does the back wheel of the Porsche look funny to you, or is it just me? It must be the great speed that’s distorting light and space.)

Neuschwanstein Castle IV

Front Court

This is the castle from the courtyard where you first come it.

It would have been hard playing softball here as a kid. Think of all the windows you would have broken. Or worst yet, when the ball rolls down the mountain, you’d have to wait a long, long time before your buddy returned with it (yeah, as if you would actually go down and get it!).

And someone should really clean those steps.
