Time and Tide

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.
- Benjamin Franklin

Time marches on. Pretty annoying, isn’t? I’ve been seeing signs of it everywhere. There is now a radio station in town that plays all of the “cool” music I grew up with. The catch? They call it “classic alternative.” My music is now classic! When did the Clash or Iggy Pop become old-time punk (okay-so the Iggster’s getting up there in age)? I don’t remember, but then they say that the memory is the second thing to go when you get old (I forget which is the first, but it’s probably not a good thing).

Time After Time

Time and tide wait for no man, but time always stands still for a woman of 30.
- Robert Frost

This is why I have to thank Roger Garrell and Katie Sharp for setting up the Fall Colour Tour. They reminded me how beautiful a Michigan fall can be. It’s too bad (for me) that I had to bail out halfway through the tour for a family engagement, especially after Prof. Garrell expounded on me the difference between a skid pad and a traffic circle. He wanted me to avoid confusion at the last turn of the tour right before the restaurant. I’ve never been an ideal student, but sometimes you can teach an old E Man new tricks. I’ll have to look for this traffic circle when I get the chance, though.

During the tour, Nick (with the 996) also reminded me of an article I wrote a few months back about driving music. While I prefer to make my own mix when I drive, I do have a few CDs that I like to listen all the way through while I drive. Here are my top three:

  1. “Every Step of the Way,” David Benoit
  2. “Fresh Aire V,” Mannheim Steamroller
  3. “Boston” (first album), Boston

So now I expect to hear from you on your favorites.

Time Of My Life

The opera ain’t over till the fat lady sings.
- Dan Cook

Somehow during the autocross, I met and dissed (American Living Fossil translation: dis-(v) make disparaging remarks of or to) all at the same time, Freeman Thomas, the designer of the Audi TT, now at DaimlerChrysler. Oops. (Can I still use Homer Simpson’s trademark “d’oh,” or is that passé now?) Fortunately, although I’m old, I still have a lot of social faux pas left in me, thereby increasing the chance of creating an even larger social blunder in the future, making this seem trivial in comparison. Life (and mistakes) goes on.

While I didn’t really plan on running in the autocross, it was more than I could stand at the end of the day-I had to run. I was able to do a handful of laps, and I wanted to do more, but as I was the last car still circulating on the course, I was afraid that the workers were going to start throwing cones that I left standing at me. Time to go — this soap opera’s over.

Smile!
