So what the heck is this, you ask? While it could be a reject from “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” it’s actually the 1939 Mercedes-Benz Typ T 80 land speed record car. Its 12-cylinder motor developed about 2800 hp, and was good for a calculated 650 km/h. How fast did it actually go? I’m not sure. I’ll have to (slowly) read up on it in my German museum literature. |

I was able to find out something about this 1938 Mercedes-Benz Typ W125, however. It achieved in 1938 a record 432.7 km/h (269 mph) in the hands of Rudolf Caraccida while driving on the Frankfurt - Darmstadt autobahn. Not bad for a public road!

This is the third record car I have for you (the museum has a few more, including the MB 190 behind this 1978 Typ C111/III). The 170 kW (228 hp), 2998 cc 5-cylinder turbodiesel in this car pushed it to 325 km/h (202 mph).
