First Time for Everything

First Cars

The car on the right is the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen. The one on the left is the 1886 Daimler Motorkutsche. The horsepower in each car is less than 1 hp, coming from 1-cylinder engines the cars have. Top speed for both is 16 km/h.

So what’s the big deal with these old cars? They were the first cars, literally! This is where it all started.

What was even cooler (for me) was that while I was there, someone started up the car on the right while giving a tour to some top-level Amercicans. It was like looking into a time machine for me as the engine sputtered to life, and the car lurched forward a few inches.

And what about this contraption? This is the world’s first motorrad, or to us Americans, the motorcycle (translation: motor wheel). Daimler invented this 1-cylinder motorcycle back in 1885. It could go 12 km/h with its 0.37 kW, 264 cc engine.

Wings of Flight

They also had some of their “normal” cars in the museum, such as this gull-winged 300 SL Coupé. Its 6-cylinder, 2996 cc engine developed 215 PS (about 215 hp) @ 5800 rpms, and was good to about 245 km/h. About 1400 of these were built between 1954 - 1957.
