A view of the Watzmann from the town of Berchtesgaden. The main peak to the right is the “king,” and the secondary peak to the left of it is the “queen.” Well, if those stupid clouds weren’t in the way, you’d see them.

Watzmann II

That first step is a doozy.

This is about 5 minutes from the Watzmann’s Haus. The path doesn’t look too steep here, but it was in other places. (For a non-walking wimp like me, this was steep enough.)

Watzmann III

The BIG Haus

This is Watzmann’s Haus, at an elevation of 1928 meters (6325 feet). That doesn’t seem very high when compared to the Rockies, for example, but one misstep and it’s still a long ways down. If that’s not high enough for you, continue on to the summit for about another 800 meters -- 2,600 feet. (Don’t ask me why that guy [the big BOAN] in the corner looks pregnant.)

Watzmann IV

Three Silly Amies;

Legend has it these three hikers had climbed the “Sleeping Witch” mountain and planted an American flag on it (sponsored by Nike). The resulting topography gave the sleeping witch a big wart on her nose. Angered, the witch turned the hikers into...

Watzmann V

Klingon Birds of Prey

...three black birds, sentenced forever to fly around the Watzmann, stealing food from unsuspecting tourists and leaving something behind on their backpacks. Or something like that. It’s a German fable, and so my translation may be a little “loose.”
