I rented this car for a few days while Cargirl visited me in Regensburg, Germany. I tried for a Boxster and got this 996 instead -- not a bad trade. The only initial disappointments: it was a Tiptronic, and there was no CD player. We decided to keep it anyway, and proceeded to put about 2300 km (1400 mi) on it.
I got over my disappointment of the Tiptronic tranny pretty quickly. It’s actually a bit fun, like driving in a video game. And it still took Cargirl to 262 km/h (163 mph), and me to wimpier 251 km/h (156 mph). A rematch is in the works.
Oh, I remember what else this car needs -- cupholders. These would have been very useful when we were trying to do 0-60 mph runs.
You can read about my impressions of this car if you go to Musings, the 1998 Left Lane archives, and August.

Here’s Cargirl driving a 996 around the Regensburg countryside. And if I could ever get the keys from her, I could be doing the same thing. (I think this was a bike path -- it’s not always easy to tell around here.)

This is what the inside of the 996 looks like through the windshield, if you’re driving through the Karussell in the Nürburgring, in the pouring rain.

All right -- ignore the fact that this is a 993 instead of a 996. Here’s a color that you don’t see too often in the United States -- unless you happen to own a Mustang II.
