What Are You Waiting For !?

Write this number down: (619) 440-6043. That’s the number for Roger Ward’s Classic Auto Racing Society (C.A.R.S.), located in 1464 Graves Ave., Suite 107-225, El Cajon, CA 92021. Their website is www.OpenRoadRacing.com.

Sign up for this race already!

(As an added bonus, the 944 was on the Deuce (ESPN2) in 1996, and the car and I were on Speedvision in 1997. I’m practically a celebrity. I even had to get an extra-large helmet for my head-- that proves it!)

General

I consider this race to be a fun weekend first, and an open road race second.

There are several version of this race, all sponsored by C.A.R.S.

I think they replaced the September Pony Express with the Gambler’s Run. There is also the Silver State Classic (or maybe it’s called the Sun Blocker something or other now). Roger Ward was originally involved in that race, but now works on the ones listed above.

Conceptually, the Pony Express is pretty straight forward. Start at Battle Mountain, Nevada and drive 83.55 miles down to Austin, Nevada down Hwy 308. You pick a target speed to drive based on the safety equipment in your car. I’ve listed the target speeds below and some requirements, but please check out C.A.R.S.’s website for the official rules and requirements.

The Gambler’s Run and the UFO Twin 50 are run a little differently than the Pony Express. You still pick a target speed, but instead of driving the entire course all at once, you drive down halfway (about 50 miles), refuel, turn around and drive back again. With this setup, it is possible for both participants in the car to drive.
