Ships That Pass In The Night

I was really hoping to be writing on another topic this month. I wanted to write about how wonderful my 944 feels back in its homeland, how the autobahn miles just melt away when I’m behind the 944’s wheel again. It was shipped from the States last month, but unfortunately, it’s not here yet! I haven’t quite gotten the concept of patience down, so frankly I’m very annoyed. There are only two areas where I’ve learned something that resembles patience. The first is when I’m working on my car, trying to screw that bolt in with my fingers where the space is too small for tools so you can only turn it 1/2 degree at a time. The second is with women <oww!>. But I’m not going to discuss those topics today either. I am, however, finishing my treatise on “The Comparative Differences between Cars and Women.” It will be published right after my tome, “Men: The Clueless Gender.”

Adventures in City Settings

As I write this, I’m preparing for a weekend trip to Paris. Just like the thousands who come to visit this city, I’m being drawn to it by the certain charm, that peculiar ambience, that je ne sais quoi of the Paris auto show , the Mondial de l’Automobile. I’m really looking forward to long walks along the carpeted aisles of the exposition halls, smelling the fragrance that can only come from a new car, and touching the sensuous surface of leather in the cars. Who wouldn’t come to Paris for all this?

But first I have to make it to the show. You see, travelling is always an adventure for me, but not in the sense most people would think of. I’m terrible when it comes to travelling. I often get lost (whether I’m driving or not), and I’m usually too stubborn to ask for directions. Couple this with the fact that I can’t speak French, and I’ll be lucky to find this place. I’ll be travelling overnight by train to get there, and I have this fear of not getting off at the correct stop. If I give you a report of the Lisbon Auto Show from Portugal, you may know why. But if that happens, well, that’s one more country where someone can spread American warmth and friendliness abroad.

Seasons In The Sun

By the time you read this, the RSR driving season will already be over. I was fortunate enough to get one day at the track back in August. It was nice to see friends again, even if only for a short period. I have a quote somewhere that says, “Friends are like money, they’re easier made than kept” (I can certainly attest to the “money” part). I have to say that’s one of the things I’ve missed most by being in Germany — friends. Almost as much as I’ve missed my car and American junk food, that is. So I want to thank Bob Sandau (as usual) and David Bates for putting the roll bar in my car before it got shipped here. There are no guarantees in life, but if my car doesn’t survive Nürburgring or the autobahn, I’m hoping I will. There are still many places I want to visit by car in North America.

And finally, did anyone notice our safety chairman’s (John Melvin) name in the September 28, 1998 issue of AutoWeek? He has a quote about some of the work he does in motorsports.

I hope everyone had fun at the charity autocross and color tour. I wish I could have been there!

Smile!
