(Smart shopping at a Media Markt - photo by: EMan Nov-1998)
This is an extremely small car. I tried taking a picture with people in the background for reference. There are only two seats, but it seemed roomy enough for me. I couldn’t figure out where the engine was at first (it’s in the back), and there’s only a little bit of room for shopping bags. Manufactured by MCC (Micro Compact Car), it’s called the Smart Car.
Some U.S. magazine did a review of this car (e.g., Nov 1998 Car and Driver). They didn’t like it too much, but I think it’s great. If you’ve tried driving and living in European cities, you appreciate how useful a small car is to park or to squeeze down narrow alleys. Supposedly, you can park two Smart Cars in a standard European parking space, if parked side-to-side (not nose-to-tail)!
It may not be practical in the U.S., but in Europe, I think I want one.

I have no idea what the gestation period of a Smart car is, but I’ll keep an eye on these cars located in the Smart dealership in Regensburg.
