More Pictures from Regensburg

Here are more pictures of Regensburg. Everytime I walk around the old city (Altstadt), I keep wishing I had my camera. It seems as if I can take pictures of so many things here. So with that, here are a few more of my favorite pictures.

Steinerne Brücke

Old Stone Bridge

This is a view of the old stone bridge from my apartment window near dusk. I have several rolls of film of this exact, same view.

The Christmas tree (“Tannenbaum”—literally, fir-tree) on the left is from the Historiche Würstkuche, or the old, historic Sausage Kitchen. The sign says the building has been around since 1320, but the kitchen itself goes back 850 years, or about when the bridge was being built. The bratwurst and sauerkraut are great, but they cost tourist prices. The cooking smells from the kitchen that hits me when I step out from my apartment are almost worth my rent alone.

When the weather is warmer, the kitchen puts out its picnic tables and umbrellas and serves their sausages outside. Many people taking river cruises (the small dock is to the right of the picture) stop here after their ride on the Danube.

The Bridge Builder

Bridge Statue

The legend goes something like this: The Master Builder’s student is given the task of building the old bridge (they called it the “old” bridge even back then, before they built it). Full of impertinence, the student challenged his master. He bet that he could complete the bridge before the master could finish the “Dom,” or cathedral.

With the bet made, the student then makes a pact with the devil, and beats his master. Distraught and humiliated, the master then jumped from the top of the church (is that a good place to kill yourself?). The bridge builder also somehow managed to outsmart the devil in their bargain (the devil’s not that bright anyway), causing the devil to flee in anger. And that’s the EMan “Tale of the Day.”

The statue above shows the student checking out the progress of his master’s Dom (veiled in fog this day).

Now, for reality: the bridge started construction in 1100s, while the dom has been worked on in stages from 950 until the late 1800’s. In any case, it makes for a good picture.

Christkindlesmarkt

Christkindlmarkt

This is Saturday (shopping day) morning in December at Neufarrplatz, a square in the city where the Christkindlesmarkt (“Christ-child market,” or maybe Kristkindlesmarkt) is held. Everyone was out for their weekly shopping and checking out the Markt for Christmas presents. It happened to be snowing BIG flakes that morning, giving the whole scene an ethereal feel. It was wonderful!

The Christkindlesmarkt is an outdoor market held during the Christmas season. Shops are set up, selling Christmas decorations and other assorted things. You can also get some sausages and other foods, as well as “glühwein,” a fruit-based wine (I think). Rest easy, though. The “glüh” here is not of the equine variety. It’s the same word used in lightbulbs (glow-bulbs), and here it means something like mulled (heated) wine.

The largest and most famous Christkindlesmarkt is up the road in Nürnberg.

One More

Tree-lined walk

This is a path along the Danube (Donau) river across from my apartment. On nice days, it’s teeming with Regensburgers out for a walk, or tourists trying to go on a boat ride along the Donau. The old kitchen with the sausages would be behind me.
